Two Month Retrospective.

Friends, Robots, Monkeys, Countrymen,

We are going on 2 months of this Robot Monkey Films business and I thought I'd take some time to write a bit about my experiences so far, how much distance we've covered, and where we plan to go from here.

I'm not quite sure, at this point, what motivated me to buy a video camera. "Everyone has a still camera." I thought to myself, always wanting to different. Jeff and I have thrown together a million ideas about making movies, no doubt about that. I saw a deal on the gear I wanted and I went for it. We've all had high hopes for our projects, but being the pragmatist that I am, I always kept my feet on the ground. Now looking back it feels like we've come a long way. Watching our youtube videos, from where we've started and up to today, there is a noticeable added polish. In lieu of our current projects on the chopping block, I expect some really great things in the future. We've lined up some offiliations with local shops and artsts and I really feel like the creative energy output is about to ramp exponentially. I never thought 2 months ago I would spend every night for weeks sewing mouths into sock puppets.

So here we are. Somewhere on this wild road to cinema. The hope for this summer is that people's schedules open up and we have time to spend whole afternoons wandering around making media. We've got a lot of irons in the fire and I'd like us all to pull together and hammer this molten ore into a mighty sword of film... or something like that...

Thank you to everyone who has helped so far, in no particular order
Jeff, Erin, Jared, Stu, Cowboy Matt, Stephanie, Shawn of Lullatone, Dan and Anthony for getting me the job, Dan of Platform One, my parents and any other friends I may have neglectd to name.

Expect great things. Demand them. In absense, create them.

Sock Puppets from Outer Space

So I got this grand idea cooked up in my head to do a movie where sock puppets invade the Earth to mate with our women (that are really just socks) and end up getting defeated by Rock and Roll. We should get to work on this.

New Associations

I'm pleased to announce that Robot Monkey Films has formed an unofficial partnership with Dr. Gonzo's Uncommon Condiments (www.drgonzos.com) and will be producing his commercials in the future. The whole team is gung ho to help this fine gent sling comestibles with greater brevity!

Fucking Around with Youtube

Yup... I've made 2 clips today.. One of me doing my shitty karaoke and the other is a movie review for THX 1138.. Gotta put this damn thing to use and I'll be damned if I know what I'm doing with it :] .. This experimentation has given me a few new insights into the potential output files of my shitty editing program, so thats good... aaaand butts...

youtube channel = dejanigma .... of course...

Fake Lost and Found

I propose we make a mock Local TV show. Shitty covers of songs. Bad comedy acts. Poorly rehearsed acrobatics. Insane commentary on issues no one cares about. The whole bit. Everyone get working on a skit they can do. I want some results on my desk by Friday. AND FINISH THOSE TPS REPORTS!

Another Review : I Drink Your Blood

We filmed last night. I'll edit it tonight and post.

Which movie(s) to start with

So we have listed tons of movies that we want to do, or attempt, etc. So now that we have the camera, some audio eqp. and working on the encoding SW, we have to decide what to do first. Before we can start the filming we need to pick the movie, write a rough script, create all the costumes/props etc, find the filming locations, etc. We should try to brainstorm this stuff. We can meet up sometime, but this is a good place to start.

I think the easiest ones to break the ice of our film company is an MST3K style movie where we can find an awesome crazy sci-fi movie that nobody else has ever seen, watch it a few times and make comments (write them down), use the funny comments and write a script, then make some weird puppets or something to act it out.

Other ideas?

Movie Ideas

Here's a rough list of movie ideas I've come up with so far :

Army Men - Buddy picture about a platoon of leathernecks in a long battle with an enemy they rarely see. All the battles will be done with plastic army guys and firecrackers. In the final scene the commander is the only one left and has been wounded in the last push. He drags himself into the enemy trench to find its deserted, no explanation.

Waiting for Godot - This is an easy target all things considered. We need about 5 dudes for the entire cast, the dialogue is written and the set consists of a road, a bench and a tree. The only thing we would need is 3 hats and a leash and we're good to go.

My 2009 Auto-Documentary - Under 10 minutes, no dialog. Just shots of me doing shit I do every day, get up, go to work, come home, drink and play computer games.

Other ideas for projects include : Movie reviews, taping shows / poetry readings, commercials, etc.

Video Editing

Got a copy of Sony Vegas 9 goin. Takes my shitty MTS videos and looks to output something more useful. Editing is pretty damn simple so far.. Now lets see how the quality is...aaaghh pixel related interruption :]... hrmmm resaving in 1080p, first attempt in 720p was not so hot.. the best output option is pure avi too.. no encoding at all.. will also see if it can read h.264 and xvid in the editor..... pretty long conversion times :/ ... wtf how is AVI way larger file size than this raw MTS file... 13 gigs for 2 minutes, half of which was just black videlo.. lol.. anyway.. ill fuck wtih it more.. good start..
